A thread is an independent sequence of execution of program code inside a UNIX process.The book describes the primary facilities for implementing multithreaded applications and offers the programmer practical guidance in using these facilities.

Threads are a new and powerful tool. As with most powerful tools, programmers must apply threads with discretion lest they do more harm than good. Part of the art of good multithreaded programming is knowing when not to use threads. Keep in mind that UNIX has gotten along for many years without them. The real impetus toward using threads has been the increasing popularity of multiprocessors and client-server computing. Typically, programs are expected to handle many requests simultaneously in these situations.

This book is for programmers interested in a practical guide to developing multithreaded programs. This book concentrates on teaching when and how to apply threads, what problems to expect and how to deal with them. It covers concurrency theory relatively lightly as there are many other books and papers that do better justice to the topic. This book also can be used as reference for the practicing threads programmer.

We assume that you are generally familiar with both UNIX programming concepts and the C programming language. It will be helpful if you have some experience with asynchronous programming using signal handlers or with programs that respond to multiple events, such as window or network programs.

This book is designed to be a general guide to programming with threads, not a tutorial on a specific set of interfaces. The two main UNIX threads interfaces are the IEEE Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) standard P1003.1c (also called "Pthreads" and ISO/IEC 9945-1:1990c) and the UNIX International (UI) threads standard (see Appendix\x11B, "UNIX International Threads"). Both have the same basic model of threads, though the actual function definitions tend to use different styles. The coding examples in this book use the thread and operating system interfaces specified by the POSIX standards.

The POSIX thread standard specifies the threads application programming interfaces and the ways in which the other POSIX interfaces behave with respect to threads. In practice, threads programming also involves using other, non-standard aspects of the threads programming environment such as debuggers, performance tools, and non-standard libraries. In addition, effective threads programming requires some knowledge of the potential ways that the interfaces may be implemented within the standard. This book explains some of the tools available in the threads programming environment and some of the potential threads implementation strategies. In-depth examples of tools and implementation strategies are taken from the SolarisTM programming environment from Sun Microsystems.

In many cases, a threads programmer will be asked to convert existing applications and libraries to be multithreaded. This book covers potential approaches to threading existing code.

A must have book on threading

Must have book that anybody interested in threading should have. Certainly not for beginner. Explains the basic constructs of threading and then takes specific instances where threading can be applied.

A simpler introductory manual

This book should have been called "Introduction to Posix threads in Solaris and multithreading issues".
Pros:
- covers Posix threads, including more complex aspects, which are "usually neglected by ... implementors" to quote the authors. Includes threads cancellation and fork behaviour.
- a set of ideas, problems and methods that you may encounter while developing multithreaded software. Most of them are on the simpler side though.
- compact, highly informative chapters (average to 20 pages each).
Cons:
- No word on differences between Unix flavours. Basically it's all refers to Solaris, which I can understand, since Mr. Kleiman is the head of Sun Solaris threading dept (also Posix threads committee member).
- C API only, no existing C++ implementations behaviour or really anything C++ related.
- Mostly recommendations. Nothing on the _existing_ practices, libs or whatever. One or two of the existing bigger pieces of software could have been surgically dissembled to show how it's done. Some math analysis is shown, but it ends with yet another recommendation.
- The methods and problems covered could be more deep, otherwise it's sort of an introduction.
- Some of the samples are too big.
Overall:
- Gives you an impression that the authors are very knowledgeable (yeah, right, see note on who one of the authors is), and capable of explaining complex things with simple words, but a little bit ignorant in that they consider the reader not worth sharing more knowledge with.
- Certain chapters must be stripped out, and more pure theoretical info added.
- A recommended book all in all.

Excellant in depth

The Book assume the reader has background in threading and OS internal related concepts (althouth pthread is for applications, it has strong similiarity with OS design issue). It gives a concise introduction to the pthread interface and semantics, then quickly (yeah, I like such way) go into application and related issue discussions. I find such way is very intuitive and meet my taste.
There are two drawbacks from general point of view, one is the book is not appopriate for Unix beginner. The other one is the examples are taken from handy code, not well trimmed to only pinpoint the topics, but it make me feel more natural and practical.

Excellent Primer on Narrative Therapy

A wonderful introduction to this WONDERFUL approach.

This book is written simply and clearly, and provides the basic principles of Narrative work. I would suggest starting here and moving on to Michael White... but even if you choose not to read on, I'm sure you'll find yourself using these techniques in some way or another. At very least, you'll start to think differently about the ways in which we story our lives.

HE HAD IT HIS WAY

A must read for all entrepreneurs. Certainly not as detailed as the biography written by Love, This autobiography of Ray Kroc is both entertaining and insightful. What he did prior to the inspiration of McDonalds across the world led up to this multi-national business of great impact and success. I think you will enjoy the insights from a man borne circa 1900 and how he was led to his position of prominence and wealth. I would read the autobiography first and then the biography written by Love secondly. This is a man who would not compromise the values of his employees nor his customers. And he used the KISS system to run and control his franchisees .He and Sam Walton had similar objectives and goals. And their outcomes were similar. Would make for a great How To book. And the rest is history. And success stories are so darn good reading that you won't be able to put these books down for long and you will recommend them to every business person you know. Good reading.

Yes, this is an older book. Who is it for? Anyone who has ever 1. Eaten McDonald's. 2. Has an interest in business. 3. Wants to know how to reboot their life and kick butt over the age of 50!

Piano player in a bordello and a lifelong Cubs fan -- top THAT Sam Walton!

I'll start by saying that I read this book at the same time I read the autobiography of Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. Ray Kroc and Sam Walton were business contemporaries, although obviously plying their trade in different industries. Walton was the Midwestern/Southern uber-WASP who attended church every Sunday, loved to quail hunt, actively participated in the local Chamber of Commerce, was an Eagle Scout, etc. You get the picture. On the other hand, Kroc (also a Midwesterner) was a high school dropout who once landed a gig playing piano in a bordello. Ray Kroc was married three times, swore with the best of them, drank with the boys, and generally led a colorful life. So if you buy Grinding It Out, be prepared to meet an extremely earthy character!

I just love this book because you get a real feel for who Ray Kroc was as a person. The book is breezy, chatty, a super easy read that is packed with fascinating anecdotes. The parts about Kroc's dealings with the McDonald brothers out of San Bernardino (via New Hampshire, of all places!) are just terrific.

To me, when a book is informative, fun and genuinely inspirational, you've got a winning combination -- and that is what you have in Grinding It Out.

Stunning!

Most neuroscientists don't believe in free will. The Buddha did not believe in self. Einstein did not believe in time. Separately, these beliefs foster forlornness. But as Bricklin shows here with exceptional clarity, when they are woven together, the opposite occurs: the illusion of will, self, and time is a coherent context for the most profound spiritual experiences from ancient times to our own.

A magisterial account

Bricklin's masterwork, years in the writing and polishing, assembles from James hints of a reality stranger than most of us have likely ever imagined. Will you leave this book convinced? I didn't; and as the book makes clear perhaps James wouldn't. But what we're fully willing to believe, and what's true, may not be the same. This very-readable book lays out a path through timelessness, or the closest approximation of such a path as paradox allows. It's a path well worth walking, not just for what it may reveal of reality, but for what it reveals about the deepest questions asked by one of humanity's best minds, fully contextualized by cross-connections to his contemporaries, and other thinkers and researchers from ancient to present.

About the Author

Philip Kotler is one of the world’s leading authorities on marketing. He is the S. C. Johnson & Son Distinguished Professor of International Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. He received his master’s degree at the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. at MIT, both in economics. He did postdoctoral work in mathematics at Harvard University and in behavioral science at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Kotler is the coauthor of Principles of Marketing and Marketing: An Introduction. His Strategic Marketing for Nonprofit Organizations, now in its seventh edition, is the best seller in that specialized area. In 2002, Professor Kotler received the Distinguished Educator Award from the Academy of Marketing Science. In 2013, he received the William L. Wilkie “Marketing for a Better World” Award and subsequently received the Sheth Foundation Medal for Exceptional Contribution to Marketing Scholarship and Practice.In 2014, he was inducted in the Marketing Hall of Fame.

He has received honorary doctoral degrees from Stockholm University, the University of Zurich, Athens University of Economics and Business, DePaul University, the Cracow School of Business and Economics, Groupe H.E.C. in Paris, the Budapest School of Economic Science and Public Administration, the University of Economics and Business Administration in Vienna, and Plekhanov Russian Academy of Economics.

Professor Kotler has been a consultant to many major U.S. and foreign companies, including IBM, General Electric, AT&T, Honeywell, Bank of America, Merck, SAS Airlines, Michelin, and others in the areas of marketing strategy and planning, marketing organization, and international marketing.

He has been Chairman of the College of Marketing of the Institute of Management Sciences, a Director of the American Marketing Association, a Trustee of the Marketing Science Institute, a Director of the MAC Group, a member of the Yankelovich Advisory Board, and a member of the Copernicus Advisory Board. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a member of the Advisory Board of the Drucker Foundation. He has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and South America, advising and lecturing to many companies about global marketing opportunities.

Kevin Lane Keller is the E. B. Osborn Professor of Marketing at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. Professor Keller has degrees from Cornell, Carnegie-Mellon, and Duke universities. At Dartmouth, he teaches MBA courses on marketing management and strategic brand management and lectures in executive programs on those topics.

Previously, Professor Keller was on the faculty at Stanford University, where he also served as the head of the marketing group. Additionally, he has been on the faculty at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been a visiting professor at Duke University and the Australian Graduate School of Management, and has two years of industry experience as Marketing Consultant for Bank of America.

Professor Keller's general area of expertise lies in marketing strategy and planning and branding. His specific research interest is in how understanding theories and concepts related to consumer behavior can improve marketing strategies. His research has been published in three of the major marketing journals: the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Marketing Research, and the Journal of Consumer Research. He also has served on the Editorial Review Boards of those journals. With more than 90 published papers, his research has been widely cited and has received numerous awards.

Actively involved with industry, he has worked on a host of different types of marketing projects. He has served as a consultant and advisor to marketers for some of the world’s most successful brands, including Accenture, American Express, Disney, Ford, Intel, Levi Strauss, Procter & Gamble, and Samsung. Additional brand consulting activities have been with other top companies such as Allstate, Beiersdorf (Nivea), BlueCross BlueShield, Campbell, Colgate, Eli Lilly, ExxonMobil, General Mills, GfK, Goodyear, Hasbro, Intuit, Johnson & Johnson, Kodak, L.L.Bean, Mayo Clinic, MTV, Nordstrom, Ocean Spray, Red Hat, SAB Miller, Shell Oil, Starbucks, Unilever, and Young & Rubicam. He has also served as an academic trustee for the Marketing Science Institute and is serving as their Executive Director from July 1, 2013, to July 1, 2015.

A popular and highly sought-after speaker, he has made speeches and conducted marketing seminars to top executives in a variety of forums. Some of his senior management and marketing training clients have included include such diverse business organizations as Cisco, Coca-Cola, Deutsche Telekom, ExxonMobil, GE, Google, IBM, Macy’s, Microsoft, Nestle, Novartis, Pepsico, SC Johnson and Wyeth. He has lectured all over the world, from Seoul to Johannesburg, from Sydney to Stockholm, and from Sao Paulo to Mumbai. He has served as keynote speaker at conferences with hundreds to thousands of participants.

Professor Keller is currently conducting a variety of studies that address strategies to build, measure, and manage brand equity. His textbook on those subjects, Strategic Brand Management, in its fourth edition, has been adopted at top business schools and leading firms around the world and has been heralded as the “bible of branding.”

An avid sports, music, and film enthusiast, in his so-called spare time, he has helped to manage and market, as well as serve as executive producer for, one of Australia’s great rock-and-roll treasures, The Church, as well as American power-pop legends Tommy Keene and Dwight Twilley. An EXCELLENT alternative to the hard cover

I purchased this book as a cheaper option to the hard cover. The information inside was identical and I was able to complete the assignments and follow along in class. I find paperback books easier to carry to and from class, so this was a great option for me. The pictures are in color, and the print is more than large enough to read. The paper quality is nice, and it is not too thin or brittle. I used this book for approximately 12 weeks during the summer semester of 2016 and it did not wear and tear. It was also easy to put post-its with notes inside and highlighter did not smear across the page. This is a very well written book and contains a great deal of relevant information about marketing. It is a good high level view for someone who has not been exposed to the field before. The index is separated into different sections including name, company, brand and organization. I found this especially helpful when I was writing essays assigned by my professor. There is also a very comprehensive glossary and easily searchable Table of Contents and includes a "Brief Contents" and "Contents" section that provided either a quick view of the pages or something more in depth depending on what you needed. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the marketing field.

I rented this book for an MBA class I took ...

I rented this book for an MBA class I took in this Spring. I have to say that this book is really well-written and engaging (something that can be difficult to find in a textbook). The chapters in the book tended to be very long, but since the content and voice was interesting, I did not mind. What was also helpful were the real-life company examples spread throughout the entire book.

Beautiful book! Came in shiny and brand new in only two days. I was very pleased to see the book sealed in plastic so I know it had definitely never been opened. It costs quite a bit of money, but it came exactly as promised. Very pleased!

Douglas Ewan Cameron Douglas Ewan Cameron is a Professor Emeritus from the Department of Mathematics of The University of Akron (Akron, OH). Upon retirement he and his wife took up residence for half the year on the shore of Hubbard Lake (Spruce MI), which basically is the setting for his Up North stories. The other half of the year is spent in Copley OH where they lived while working and it is from there they do most of their traveling. They have visited all seven continents and over one hundred countries. Places they have visited have become settings in his books including Hong Kong, which is important in Wings of a Butterfly. He has written all his life albeit research papers while he was working and short stories in his youth. Retirement has given him time to fish and write, both past times he loves. About the Author
Hendrik Santo, MScEE, is a power management semiconductor design architect based in the Silicon Valley California. With over 40 years research in Wing Chun Kuen, and more than 20 years research in the Six Healing Sounds, this is his second book. He was a student of the Chan Patriarch, the late Venerable Master Hsuan Hua. Hendrik was a student of the late Grandmaster, Cho Hung Choy of the Yik Kam Wing Chun Kuen lineage. He is also a grand student of Grandmaster Ma Li Tang of the Six Healing Sounds.

Internal Art 101

The content of the book is really not your usual book on internal art.

Usually when one looks at any martial art books in the market, most start off with their histories and legends, how great the creators and the disciples of the style were, who had they beaten up, the theory of the style, the interpretation of the theory, then come the forms and the applications. Legends are usually over exaggerated while theories are usually fuzzy and unorganized, vocabularies are undefined or not properly translated into modern language, and process, if there is any, lacks specific targeted outcome. This internal art 101 book takes a no nonsense approach. It delves directly to define all the foundation theories (after all everybody is subject to the Tao or in this case the law of physics and traditional Chinese medicine, right?) The system is broken into 6 core elements, body, mind, breathing, qi, force flow, and momentum. These different elements to the art are analogous to different systems in a factory I.e. the building, the electrical system, the water system, the air system, the production process, the quality control process, etc. All the vocabularies as well as different states in each element are clearly defined together with the process to lead one to experience each state. The experience is invaluable to internal art practitioners for it provides the minimum level of target (kpi, benchmark or reference point) one should aim and built upon when practicing whatever internal art one chooses. This objective, unambiguous, and systematic approach is a real breeze of fresh air and the cornerstone in the field of internal art.

I am delighted to work with my Yik Kam Wing Chun Kuen Sifu,
Hendrik Santo, in the release of Wing Chun Kuen Basic Art and
Science. I first met Hendrik in 1999 following the release of my coauthored
work, “Complete Wing Chun: The Definitive Guide to
Wing Chun's History and Traditions”, when he shared with me the
Yik Kam Kuen Kuit and the original Yik Kam Wing Chun Siu Lin Tau
set that he had inherited in his lineage.

As the focus of martial arts has been a major driving force in my life,
I was fascinated with an older version of Wing Chun Kuen. I have
practiced Wing Chun Kuen for nearly forty years and have written
many articles, been the subject of many articles and videos on the
subject. As history was one of my interests, I delved into the past
and research almost all lineages of Wing Chun.

I learned about Hendrik’s life and found that he was a disciple of
the great Venerable Master Hsuan Hua in Buddhism, and of
different traditions of Qi Gong. We worked on a previous work of
Six Healing Sounds Made Simple, and now when he wanted to
release his other work, I volunteered to edit it.

In this work, you will have experienced Hendrik’s more than 40
years of research to improve not only your Wing Chun Kuen, but to
also address areas where you can be a balanced human being.
Although I have studied other forms of Wing Chun, most have
turned out to be unbalanced, preferring to focus as a weapon of
self-defense. They have paled in comparison as a holistic art
balancing mind, body, and spirit.

Wing Chun Kuen Basic Art and Science will take you on a journey
from the Physical Body, addressing the Mind, teach you how to
adjust your Breathing, become aware of Energy that courses in your
body, explain what is Strength in the martial arts, and how to utilize
Momentum, to finally become a holistic and Balanced individual.

I would like to say, although this book is brief, it is deep, and may be destined as a classic in the field.

This is a unique and revealing textbook on internal martial arts!

This is a concise but very illustrative work on various aspects of internal martial arts, more specifically on Wing Chun Kuen. Hendrik Santo summarizes his more than 40 years of research on internal martial arts with this logical and easy to follow model 6 13 3. He demystifies many concepts, such as, loose, natural, and quiet. Many people think they know what these terms mean, but we often assume many wrong ideas that lead us in the wrong direction. Hendrik presents simple exercises to experience these concepts, so that we stop any guessing or speculation about the concepts. Once these concepts are clear, then we steer on a clearer path to learn any internal martial arts or healing art. This book is a stepping stone to learn the ancient arts. It does not make anyone automatically a great Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter. It does however provide the tools to learn the proper physical, mind, breathing, energy, force, and momentum conditions necessary for martial arts. He uses today's English language to explain clearly many ancient Chinese martial art concepts, so that we don't have to waste time guessing or be misled by obscure internal martial arts masters.
