Entertaining, but disappointing

Part of Nisei Daughter's charm is the way Sone is able to weave entertaining anecdotes throughout her tale, a story which is essentially about what being Japanese American in the time around wartime America meant to her. Specifically, her position as a Nisei daughter -- child of first generation Japanese Americans -- is the focus of this tale.
The disappointing thing about this book is how obviously self-censored the book is. Sone very briefly reveals deeply felt rage and resentment at intervals during the book, only to shake them off and quickly change to a more light-hearted topic. Granted, there is an ironic tone to many of her comments and situations, and again granted, she is writing for a post-war audience that probably would not be receptive to outspoken criticism of the Internment, but still Sone seems to sugar coat the experience just a bit too much for my tastes. By the end, with the patriotic speeches that make it sound like the Internment was as much the fault of the Japanese Americans as it was the government, I was getting a little tired of Sone's carefree and apologetic tone, especially after the highly charged preface. In the book, Sone all but thanks the government for interning her and her family and giving them this character-building experience.
If you are truly interested in the internment and the impact it had on the Japanese Americans, try a book like Joy Kogawa's "Obasan." It's written about the Japanese Canadian experience, which was even more extreme than the Japanese American one. Kogawa also experienced internment first hand, but "Obasan" is written far enough after the fact that Kogawa is able to give the story more perspective and is able to put a more honest face on what really happened.
Nisei Daughter is not a bad book by any means ... but it did not live up to my expectations either. Sone's self-conscious editing makes the story seem much more like a novel than the autobiography that it supposedly is. I kept wishing she would drop the mask she was wearing and let the reader see what she was really thinking!

An interesting, well-crafted memoir

This is the story told by a daughter of Japanese immigrants growing up in pre-World War II Seattle. She was in college when Pearl Harbor struck.
I think the best parts of this memoir deal with the description of Japanese culture and the conflict between the Americanism of the Nisei and their Issei parents most of whom heavily maintained Japanese customs. Perhaps the funniest part of the latter in the book takes place during the wedding reception held for her brother Henry and his bride in their camp in Idaho during the war.
I'd have to say that the best written, the most vivid part of the books is the family trip to visit relatives in Japan where her little brother Kenji fatally contracted dysentery. I'm guessing that this trip must have taken place around 1929.
The author gets released from camp mid-way through the war to go live with some former missionaries in Chicago who are very nice. She works for a dentist who is, however, a real pain in the butt and she eventually quits.
She then gets the opportunity to go attend Wendell college in Indiana where she lives with a nice old widow and she says that this college was full of alot of diverse foreign students. She made many close friends. During her post-camp period, her faith in American democracy was largely restored because she met so many nice white Americans who weren't racist louts. The book ends on a sort of patriotic note which I can't follow completely. In Chicago she was often mistaken for Chinese and people told her how much they respected the Chinese people, America's ally and she was sometimes mistaken for various Chinese celebrities.
It's obvious, that the author, who at the time of this 1979 edition, was still a clinical psychologist, knows how to write. She is a very gifted descriptive writer, though sometimes she lays it on too heavy. She tells her life story with a great deal of sentimentality; at times I think she pours it on a little too sweetly. But heck it's her story and she crafts it very well.

Both my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this wonderful story about growing up in America as a 2nd generation Japanese-American. It is an important book to read so that we can better appreciate how fortunate folks are in the USA, and the importance of continued acceptance of other cultures and future citizens of the USA.

A dictionary of the sects and divisions within Islam.

Written by a 12th century Muslim theologian this book was intended to give his fellow theologians a clear concise dictionary of the early to his time theological sects within Islam.

The book covers the major three Islamic groups the Sunni, Shia and Khawarij and then the sub groups that exist amongst them. The author provides the reader with a brief account of how the sect came into being, the founder of the sect and its teachings.

Of particular interest to the reader will be the authors examination of the beliefs of the Mutazila and its various sub groups, the Jahmiyya, the Asharites and the various sub groups of the Shia.

The book may be a little too much to consume for the casual reader or the beginner in the study of Islam but for someone who wishes to study Islam in depth then this book is invaluable as it will give the reader an understanding of the theological divisions within Islam and how they developed. It will give the reader an understanding of for example, the differences between a Shia and Sunni, when Muslims refer to a group as having 'Jahmiyya' beliefs just what that is, why even amongst Shia there are massive theological differences.

Shahrastani was a man of his time. A committed Sunni Muslim (which some may argue may cloud some of his views he presents in his book) He taught at the great Nizamiyye and engaged in debates with probably the largest and greatest theological threat to Sunni Islam at the time the Ismailis. The main fault with the book is that it is so short and for the price it may be worth shopping around.

Other than that, a first class book and one well worth buying.

One of the Best but Intensive Texts

It might not have lush photos and graphics, yet this revised printing version of "Introduction to Organic Chemistry" remains one of the most authoritative text for introductory level.
Readers are assumed solid mastery of one year of general chemistry since the coverage on electronic structure and bonding is succinct. Readers should be able to draw Lewis dot structures and identify the major resonance structures from all resonance structures, etc.
Two separate chapters discuss respectively organic structures and chapter reactions, who incorporate the simple chemistry of alkanes (hydrocarbons). Stereoisomerism is introduced early in the text so students can grasp this important concept and the consequence on reactions, reactivity and distribution of products.
Discussion on nucleophilic substitution reaction is somewhat obscure that might requires a few readings in order to grasp the idea. Discussion on various functional groups (alkenes, alkynes, nitriles, ketones, enol, carboxylic acids, carboxylic derivatives) are very detailed and problems focus on multistep organic synthesis.
Information on spectroscopy (NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, etc) might not be comparable to a text that devotes to these spectroscopy topics, but students will learn the gist and essence of using these techniques in determining organic structures.
What makes this text distinguish itself from others are the chapters on hetero atoms like phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. Another chapter is devoted to difunctional compounds which are siginificant intermediates and starting points for synthesis. Discussion on biological macromolecules like carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins are also included. Readers will also find the door to advanced topics such as aromatic halides, phenols, phenyl ethers, polycyclic aromatic compounds, and heterocyclic compounds.
Overall the information presented here is very detailed and geared toward advanced study and research. This is highly recommended for serious chemisty students. Excellent problems. Highly recommended.

Lots of Molecular Orbitals

This includes a lot of the physics behind organic chemistry. Streitweiser did a lot of pioneering work in the 50s calculating molecular orbitals so that aspect is very nicely covered. He discovered a lot of what is presented so it gives the book a sense of authority.
The writing has an appealing friendliness to it, like an older relative is taking you under their wing as an apprentice. Their are a few reminisences, such as the time they distilled an explosive peroxide and the resultant explosion moved furniture in nearby rooms it shook the building so much.

This is a very hard-core and detailed treatment of the subject of organic chemistry. Ideal for chemistry majors, this book has served as a refresher for me as a professional chemist. The book assumed mastery over general chemistry and the prerequisites of chemical structure and bonding. Practice problems are only to help develop further insight and application of the chemistry presented.

All fluff and no stuffing

Three words of advice: save your money. Whereas "The Closers" was all steak, "The Closers 2" is as thin as one scrawny piece of bacon. There really is no subtsance to this book. It puports to yield more "secrets" to powerful selling, but it's full of light and largely useless bromides. As I was reading it I felt sure I would come to the "good stuff" soon, but never did. It was like one continuous preface, telling you what goodies there were coming soon, but never getting to them. It is shameful that the cover carries a "WARNING -- not for the beginner or novice, but for sales professionals ONLY." This is puffery of the worse kind, a sleazy sales "trick" that does not belong in any self-respecting salespersons's reportoire. I'm afraid the rest of the book goes downhill from there.

hit and miss

The original Sudden Fiction anthology was something of a literary groundbreaker as well as the start of a franchise--Robert Shapard and James Thomas could be credited with giving sudden (aka flash, aka micro, aka short short) fiction a formal stage so that the genre could (and did) become acceptable in all kinds of venues where it had not been considered legitimate before. Obviously, Raymond Carver's seminal collection What We Talk About When We Talk About Love (the one edited by Gordon Lish, who of course wanted to take full credit for the form in the first Sudden Fiction anthology) may have been among the first collections to qualify the boundaries of short fiction into the realm of a page or two, but Shapard & Thomas' first Sudden Fiction anthology was possibly the first popular proof that this short form was just as competent as the longer short story form and could be tackled by writers just as competent as Carver.

From there, Shapard & Thomas sparked the Sudden Fiction anthology series and even did spots of the Flash Fiction anthology series, together or separately. This volume is the most recent installment, and it follows the method of the others--stories that tend to fall in the range of 2,000 words or lower, and familiar names (Tobias Wolff, Sam Shephard, Joyce Carol Oates, etc.) standing next to names that are not as familiar, due either to neglect in the whorls of the literary administration or to the general low quality of their work.

Of course, any anthology is going to have its hits and misses, and this one is no exception. Aimee Bender is a nice turn in the road, since all the stories before hers seem to have a definite realist tendency, and hers is the first to explore the realm of the surreal, and does so quite powerfully. Ha Jin's piece about humor and those political machines that have none is about as powerful as any Mo Yan novel, and Chuck Palahniuk is as verbose as ever, though the shorter form lets his piece resonate nicely without being swept away by its language. Sherrie Flick's "How I Left Ned" is wonderfully creepy and gothic, a story that could only be sustained in an abbreviated form, and Geoffrey Forsyth's "Mud" is an incredible musing on grief. Stacey Richter's "The Minimalist" is a spin through the world of an artistic and personal meltdown. These works show the power of the sudden fiction format--the emotions are intense, bombastic and ride prominently on the sleeve. They aren't poetic, and so don't seem appropriate to call prose poems, but instead have that kind of grounded punch that good fiction has, with events that might not be familiar but are certainly sympathetic.

Some of the misses, though, really dragged down this collection, as they showed the weaknesses this genre can exude. Toure's "I Shot the Sherriff" is a pretty redundant piece that takes a lot of obvious moves and shows a pretty weak writing hand (despite the author's arrogant bio at the back of the book). Robert Olen Butler's "Seven Pieces of Severance" is just a poor smattering of pieces from his collection Severance--cryptic monologues from decapitated heads. Elizabeth Berg's "The Party" is a rather typical musing on the differences between men and women--rather one-sided and cliché by the end. These are the pieces that serve as reminders that the term Sudden Fiction can sometimes be used to try to legitimize failed short stories--many of these pieces provide little of the kind of interest that sustains good short fiction, no matter how long: a vivid glimpse into genuine human character.

The failings of this collection are a little less forgivable than they would be in previous anthologies only because Shapard & Thomas have helped define and justify this genre, so it would seem that their positions would entail and effort to further define the genre's boundaries and possibilities. While there are quite a few pieces here that show a maturation of the sudden fiction genre, it is clear that the term is also being used to try to give credence to short-minded, poorly imaginative work. Perhaps that is just the nature of the literary game, but I would have rather finished this collection with a twitter of excitement and possibility rather than a pang of some missed opportunity.

I've enjoyed flash fiction for a long while now, but it has been more than awhile since I've visited the form.

This was an excellent collection to dive back in with, as most every story hit me in some way.

The preface discusses how this length and form just seems to "work," as many shorter stories can feel too incomplete or ambiguous, and longer works can start to get bogged down. However, this length of story packs a hell of a punch, and many of these stories are perfect examples of that punch.

What I liked best, though, is the range of when these were written. I had originally assumed that all were recent stories. However, upon checking out the contributor's notes, I saw how many had copyright dates decades ago. I never would have guessed. These writer's have all done what we should strive to: they touch on something that resonates throughout the years and contexts.

That, to me, makes this more than worth the read, and--even more--makes this collection one to study, if you want to learn the short form.

Broad in Scope, a Bit Uneven in Quality

This compilation is a great effort at both defining "sudden fiction" by example and at displaying the broad scope of the work that's out there, including pieces from all over the globe. The work, according to the editors, was collected over a set period in the early 00's from what has been getting published in journals and magazines around the world. In that regard, this collection truly succeeds in capturing what the current flavor/definition is for the short-short story (not to be confused with "flash fiction," which is even shorter) (and collected in a different companion book by the same publisher) (I also admittedly plan to read it eventually) and ensures that there won't be (m)any repeats in here from other anthologies you may have read.

What is slightly disappointing about this collection is that the quality (for this reviewer) is a bit uneven. While all the stories are of rather similar lengths (3 to 5 pages for the most part), some simply go nowhere, reflecting on a moment or character in detail and arriving at very little in the way of stimulating conclusions. Others, such as Tobias Wolfe's or Sam Shepard's (two of the best in the bunch), nicely portray real conflicts, draw very real characters, and maintain forceful narratives throughout, with endings that satisfy.

If you enjoy short fiction, this is certainly worth reading, then perhaps selling back if you find only a little that you like (I'll probably keep my copy, as I think I like the parts I like enough to want to read them again later on). If you're trying to get into what's going on in contemporary short(-short) fiction, there is no better place to start. Author bios in the back will give you other book titles and such as launching points for further reading as well.

Classic Thought Made Accessible

I was wary of this book when I first purchased it, but to my delight it turned out to be the best introduction to the Hermes/Thoth literature available. Beyond the value of its clear and readable presentation of some of the oldest wisdom tracts in the Western World, the authors also briefly touch on the provinence of the works. Because the Hermes Corpus was declared a fraud in the 17th century, the heavy lifting required to point out that they are not is simply beyond the scope of this volume. But any reader who is intrigued by the material can go on and discover for themselves the story of Hermes and make their own judgement. I place the rediscovery of the Hermes Corpus on the same level as the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi texts, so this fine introductory volume should be considered by anyone interested in ancient literature and spirituality.

NOT the actual Hermetica, but a jumbled intro *about* it

This book is basically a chop shop version of the Corpus Hermeticum and Asclepius, with translated excerpts taken from various sources including other authors who have been inspired by Hermeticism instead of the original source material itself. If that's what you're interested in, so much the better, but the title is really misleading. It would be more appropriate to say this book is a composite of Hermetic and Hermetically-inspired teachings.

A number of the reviewers on here say they're newcomers to the Hermetica and that they really appreciated this approach, finding it simple and easier to digest. In fairness, I've been studying the Hermetica for years, so perhaps your needs and views will be different from mine. I do have to say, however, that I found this book very deficient. I suppose if you want to study this subject, you could compare this book to fast food.

Pros:

1) The intros are written in clear English that anyone with a high school level education should be able to understand. If you don't give a toss for footnotes, you'll like that.
2) There's a list of sources in the back for further reading, should you wish to take your Hermetic studies further.
3) There's also a list of where this book was excerpted from, which I appreciated. This book is so drastically different from the actual Hermetica that when I first opened it, I did a double-take.

Cons:

1) The most obvious: this is an assortment of excerpts *from* the Hermetica as well as *about* the Hermetica. It appears that the chapters are created by subject matter, which means Freke and Gandy pulled excerpts from various sources instead of keeping them in their original order (and in complete form instead of pulling excerpts and adding in stuff from other ancient authors). A glance at the source material in the back of the book confirmed this suspicion. I can't reiterate enough how much wisdom is lost in this version. It's a completely different document. In this book, you see what looks like poetry. The actual Hermetica is a series of conversations between Hermes and a god-being named Poimandres in a series of question-and-answer sessions, as well as between Hermes and his own students.
2) The decision to compile this book from a number of sources makes me question the translation, honestly, including the decision to refer to God as Atum. The authors claim it's because the concept of God is loaded in our society with certain conceptions that they wanted to avoid, but their word choice is poor. It's hard to explain if you haven't read the actual Hermetica, but basically Atum still misses the mark of fully encapsulating everything that Hermes Trismegistus was trying to say.

I can't hate on this book, because at least it's gotten people's appetites whetted for Hermeticism - which sounds like the original goal of Freke and Gandy. I love the Hermetica, but I'll be the first to say that it can be dense reading when you first open it. What Freke and Gandy have created is, in essence, a weak Cliff's Notes overview, and of course such a thing will always be lacking to the original. Evidently a number of reviewers have found value in this, so I can't dismiss that. But if you're looking for something with the original wisdom intact, or you've already read the actual Hermetica, you may find this book useless.

If you're interested in the genuine article, you should check out Hermetica: The Greek Corpus Hermeticum and the Latin Asclepius in a New English Translation, with Notes and Introduction. It's the best English language translation available today. The original writings are only 90 pages, with the rest of the book composed of a history and footnotes.

I prefer going straight to the source when studying something rather than having an author chop things up and take translation and editorial liberties on my behalf as Freke and Gandy have, but that's me. Obviously many reviewers here have appreciated their approach, so whether you like this book will probably depend on which approach you prefer.

I do hope, though, that even if you read Freke and Gandy's book, you will continue on to the original source material with Copenhaver's translation. There is so much in there that is missing in Freke and Gandy's book; if you think their book blew your mind, go to the source! In fact, I suggest that if and when you read Compenhaver's book, do so with a pen in hand and underline passages that particularly interest you, as well as take notes and jot down questions as you go. Believe me, you'll have a lot of them.

Deliberate misinterpretations

This is more a text "inspired by" the Greek and Latin Hermetica, and not a translation. For example, where the latin text has "deus", meaning of course "god", Freke & co. consistently translate as "Atum". Deus/theos in the Hermetica is not a proper name, but an honorific for the supreme principle, which is NEVER identified as the egyptian god Atum in the texts.
Buy instead "Hermetica" by Brian Copenhaver, or "The Way of Hermes" by Clement Salaman et al.
