Better But Not Well: Mental Health Policy in the United States since 1950, by Richard G. Frank, Sherry A. Glied

The past half-century has been marked by major changes in the treatment of mental illness: important advances in understanding mental illnesses, increases in spending on mental health care and support of people with mental illnesses, and the availability of new medications that are easier for the patient to tolerate. Although these changes have made things better for those who have mental illness, they are not quite enough.

In Better But Not Well, Richard G. Frank and Sherry A. Glied examine the well-being of people with mental illness in the United States over the past fifty years, addressing issues such as economics, treatment, standards of living, rights, and stigma. Marshaling a range of new empirical evidence, they first argue that people with mental illness―severe and persistent disorders as well as less serious mental health conditions―are faring better today than in the past. Improvements have come about for unheralded and unexpected reasons. Rather than being a result of more effective mental health treatments, progress has come from the growth of private health insurance and of mainstream social programs―such as Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, housing vouchers, and food stamps―and the development of new treatments that are easier for patients to tolerate and for physicians to manage.

The authors remind us that, despite the progress that has been made, this disadvantaged group remains worse off than most others in society. The "mainstreaming" of persons with mental illness has left a policy void, where governmental institutions responsible for meeting the needs of mental health patients lack resources and programmatic authority. To fill this void, Frank and Glied suggest that institutional resources be applied systematically and routinely to examine and address how federal and state programs affect the well-being of people with mental illness.

Review

Offers many insights beneficial to the informed reader.

(David Mechanic New England Journal of Medicine)

The authors are true to their word in providing an excellent overview of changes in the last 50 years. They provide compelling evidence that the condition of many, if not most, persons with mental illness has improved during that period.

(JAMA)

By pulling information from a wide variety of sources, these authors provide a fresh and optimistic look on improvements in the well-being of people with mental illness. A major contribution to the field.

(Steven Sharfstein, President and CEO of the Sheppard Pratt Health System)

An important and provocative addition to the literature dealing with health policy.

(Gerald N. Grob, Ph.D., Institute for Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research, Rutgers University, author of The Deadly Truth)

Professors Frank and Glied offer a broad-based and candid assessment of the evolution of mental health care in the United States and of how the well-being of people touched by mental health problems changed during the last half of the twentieth century.

(Rosalynn Carter, from the Foreword)

Will be of greatest interest to students of mental health economics, services, and policy, but clinicians interested in the relationship between health policy and everyday practice will also find it useful.

(Burton V. Reifler International Psychogeriatrics)

Provides a necessary counterpart to much overenthusiastic optimism surrounding recent development in psychopharmacology and the neurosciences.

(Bonnie Evans Journal of Mental Health)

Offers a fascinating... historical analysis of mental health policy.

(Ellen Dwyer History of Psychiatry)

Should be assigned to every practitioner, mental health clinician, administrator, and advocate ― as well as every legislator and policy maker―concerned with the status of Americans with serious mental illness.

(William Fisher Psychiatric Services)

If one... has time to read one book on mental health policy this year, this should be the one.

(Roger Meyer Health Affairs)

A comprehensive assessment of changes in the life conditions and well-being of persons with serious mental illnesses over the past five decades.

(Janet R. Nelson Clergy Journal)

A well-written and important work that provides a definitive look at the past and a glimpse into the future of mental health policy in America.

(Kathleen Brown RN, MSN, PhD Nursing History Review)

A cut and dry policy book
By Mathew Knudson
It's a relatively unbiased view of the evolution of mental health policy in the US, and it covers most of the key points, from availability and structure of care to the costs and financing, as well as quality of care. There's also some minor discussion of rights and social stigma based on survey data. However, it buys into the mainstream narrative of psychiatry, which is very positive toward the field, which is challenge by a lot of new research, as well as books such as "American Psychosis". This book is a great start, but you should probably couple it with a few other readings if you really want a comprehensive understanding of what's happened.

Mental Health Policy Book
By Professor
Provides a good historical overview of the mental health system. Details the rise and fall of various therapies and gaps
in the system.

Purchase this book with the recognition that its value is in its historical / policy approach of the subject. Some of the
commentary on pharmacology is dated - example, tricyclics being noted as first line therapy for depression.

Excellent overview
By Kevin
I found the coverage of factors that have impacted mental health care in the US very comprehensive and authoritative. The authors are clearly thoughtful about the complexities, including the philosophical and sociological perspectives at play, and extremely knowledgeable about the pragmatic details of policy development and implementation. An excellent work!

Review
“Honnold blows wide open any conventional understanding of the term ‘comfort zone.’…He engagingly conveys his love of climbing.” (Barbara J. King - NPR)

“[Honnold] is the foremost practitioner of the dark art of free solo rock climbing―ascending extremely difficult cliffs hundreds, sometimes thousands, of feet tall without ropes or protection hardware of any kind. That is every bit as stupefying as it sounds.” (Wall Street Journal)

“Honnold here recounts his ascents on some of the world's most dangerous rock walls. You'll come away questioning his sanity for choosing this controversial sport…But it's also impossible not to feel awe.” (People)

“Honnold has free-soloed the longest, most challenging climbs ever. Most peculiar of all, even to elite rock climbers, Honnold does this without apparent fear, as if falling were not possible.” (Daniel Duane - New York Times Magazine)

“Honnold is the biggest name in a group of adventure athletes engaging in high-risk live action-sports spectacles that seem to be pulled from the Evel Knievel playbook.” (Grayson Schaffer - Outside)

“Alex is really the first climber to rise from the margins of this lonely fringe sport to become a kind of celebrity.” (Josh Dean - Men's Health)

A Treat to the Adventurous Souls!
By Chia
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sports/adventure biography. First of all, the format of the book is easy to follow with two narratives, one of Alex and one of the co-author, D. Robert. At first, I wondered why Alex chose this format as he already writes decently. Then, I realized this format provided a third person perspective for the readers to appreciate the gravity of some of the accomplishment. Alex's choice of co-author definitely was superb - I have read several D. Robert's books, always enjoyed them. Secondly, aside from the obvious (but still thrilling) climbing accomplishment/adventure, Alex's sense of humor really came through. The book was very entertaining to read! Finally, I think anyone who appreciates athleticism/adventure, climber or not (I have climbed but am not an avid climber), will enjoy this book for a lot of the "lessons" are universal. A side note, I really appreciate Alex's downplaying on those "lessons" - he doesn't overstate them, but really just tells a story and lets the readers decipher whatever apply to them. It is not "preachy", even though it still inspires the audience.

An invigorating & inspiring read!
By Brett
“There is no adrenaline rush. If I get an adrenaline rush, it means that something has gone horribly wrong.” -Alex Honnold

Alone on the Wall is a phenomenal book from a phenomenal adventurer. I first learned of Alex Honnold's feats of climbing through the short film by the same name as this book. This book provides a deeper look into the journey that brought him to the public spotlight and the epic feats of adventuring he has completed since.

It's incredibly inspiring to read in detail these accounts of Alex's ascents, link-ups, and expeditions. I was pumped every day that I was reading the book & got in lots of hiking and gym climbing.

The book worked well with two authors. The narration alternates between italicized sections where Alex accounts his climbs first hand and the general text written by David Roberts that provides a third party perspective to the full spectrum of Alex's story. David also tied in key snippets of information about Alex from his climbing films, historical context for the climbing accomplishments, and enough technical explanation to allow even non-climbers to enjoy the narrative.

KINDLE READERS: Locations 3170-3252 are stunning photos! I was so gripped by the story I did not even notice the photos until reaching the end of the text, at which point I flipped slowly through them with mouth slightly agape.

FINAL TAKE: Highly recommended to all who want inspiration to elevate their dreams and continue pushing their personal adventures.

"I think of all the people who inspired me as a kid, and I sort of realize they were all normal people, too. I just do my normal life, and if people choose to be inspired by the things I’m doing, then I’m glad they’re getting something out of it.” - Alex Honnold

The book echos just how cool he is in his eyes
By Marcus James
Alex "No Big Deal" is quietly Narcissistic. The book echos just how cool he is in his eyes... but it's just something I slightly expected. Not really captivated by his description of his love life or reading how he describes himself as an intelligent "genius" multiple times.

Expect awesome descriptions of climbs on very famous routes! But also expect to read about how awesome Alex is in first person POV.

Feminism, Law, and Religion (Gender in Law, Culture, and Society)From Routledge

With contributions from some of the most prominent voices writing on gender, law and religion today, this book illuminates some of the conflicts at the intersection of feminism, theology and law. It examines a range of themes from the viewpoint of identifiable traditions such as Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism, from a theoretical and practical perspective. Among the themes discussed are the cross-over between religious and secular values and assumptions in the search for a just jurisprudence for women, the application of theological insights from religious traditions to legal issues at the core of feminist work, feminist legal readings of scriptural texts on women's rights and the place that religious law has assigned to women in ecclesiastic life. Feminists of faith face challenges from many sides: patriarchal remnants in their own tradition, dismissal of their faith commitments by secular feminists and balancing the conflicting loyalties of their lives. The book will be essential reading for legal and religious academics and students working in the area of gender and law or law and religion.

Review
'This valuable book offers powerful new insights into the troubled relations between religion and feminism. The contributors go beyond facile dichotomies to show the paradoxes and complexities of the human condition. Cutting across different religions, the book offers a salutary understanding of how women experience - and often resolve - the tension between faith and feminism. We are on the threshold of a new phase in the politics of religion and gender, both globally and locally.'Ziba Mir-Hosseini, University of London, UK

Competing Schools of Economic Thought, by Lefteris Tsoulfidis

1. 1 Introduction This book was born out of our reaction to the way in which the usual texts cover the subject of the history of economic thought. In most of these texts, there is a tendency to emphasize the similarities and differences between all the important economists and form a repository of encyclopedic knowledge where one can study the seemingly important economic ideas. In this book, we argue that it is much more fruitful to focus on the essential ideas of each and every school of economic thought and relate them to present-day problems, than to engage into a sterile discussion of the ideas and the lives of the great economists of the past. Thus, although this book deals with the history of economic thought, it does not necessarily follow a historic (in the sense of the order of presentation) approach, but rather a logical one, that is to say it deals with the social conditions associated with the emergence of a school of economic thought, its evolution, and its contemporary in?uence. One cannot write a book on the history of economic thought without writing separate chapters on the major economists of the past, that is, Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Karl Marx, and J. M. Keynes. Of course these economists formed schools of economic thought, that is, the classical and the Keynesian.

From the Back Cover

The greatest works of economists have the potential to provide insights on current economic developments and policy challenges long after they are written. This book seeks to investigate the evolution of the core ideas and policy recommendations of the major schools of economic thought, and to present and critically evaluate those theories that have survived over time and can inform us about current developments and economic policies. The theories of major economists are presented and used to promote an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the economy and to address contemporary problems and issues. In addition, the book explores the fascinating dynamics of shifting from one school of economic thought to another. Each chapter concludes with a summary, critical remarks, a set of questions for reflection and discussion, and recommendations for further reading.

Review
'This new exam preparation course takes a 'flipped' learning approach, which means students receive language input before their face-to-face class. This pre-class preparation can be done online or using the excellent 112-page workbook. Class time is then spent developing language skills and exam strategies. The teacher's book is essential, providing spot checks to clarify students' understanding of language points, and extension activities. Each of the twelve units finishes with exam practice tasks, which can be done for homework. The book is full of useful exam tips.' Book of the month, EL Gazette, April 2016, p. 19
