Allen Rubin has been doing and teaching research since 1976, when he received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Renowned in social work, Dr. Rubin has written several research texts, published numerous research studies on social work practice, and is a past president of the Society for Social Work and Research.

Muddled prose, can lead students into statistical errors

I wanted to like this book. The title is great for the course I will be teaching. I quickly found problems, but felt 'well, I can teach around that point.' After working through 100 or so pages I began to ask myself: "If I have to struggle at understanding what the author should be saying, how will students possibly understand?" There are many examples, but I will give one for stat teachers who might read this. EVERYONE who teaches stat knows that we do not prove the null hypothesis; we merely reject it or let it stand. Rubin instead goes through a discussion (see p. 102) about why we would not "confirm the null hypothesis." The discussion centers on the idea that the probability found might be 0.15 or 0.20 ---- that suggests, he says, that we cannot be sure that the null is true. He thus tempts the student to think, "well, if I calculate a t or r and find the probability to be 0.80, maybe then I have shown the null to be true." What EVERYONE, author, teacher, and student, should say is that with small sample sizes, we will often not reject really false null hypotheses. Instead, all we need to do, as implied by Rubin, is test a small sample discover that a very large probability, and presto, we have confirmed the null hypothesis. (SPSS results will provide such large probabilities even though they are not available in t, F, etc. tables in stat books.)
Regretfully, I am still looking for a text for the Spring class.

Reads terrible

I am almost through my statistics class and if it wasn't for the tutor, teacher, and fellow classmates I would have struggled with just reading this book. It jumps all over the place and over examples things. ARG! is how I felt every time I read it.

Overall, a good textbook for statistics in social work practice

This is a good basic text to learn statistics for social work research. I am giving it 3 stars because there are some areas where I found the authors to go into great length to explain things that are more confusing than helpful. These areas that I found confusing were not covered in my graduate school stats class, and I therefore found it unnecessarily complicating the already daunting subject. Overall, the authors are great teachers in their clarity of writing style, presentation of information, and ability to explain complex matters to a wide audience.

In my book: "Trauma and Transformation: A 12-Step Guide", I fully explore the spiritual side-effects of trauma, and how the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous is a powerful systematic approach for the trauma survivor seeking a spiritual solution.

BREAKING OUT OF YOUR SHELL

I received a KINDLE Edition of this book through a giveaway on LibraryThing and the following is my honest opinion.

Introverts tend to live in a world of their own, while looking at those around them continuously interacting with each other. They wish they could interact along with them, but feeling secure in the way they are, they can’t.

The thing is, I feel comfortable being an introvert which why I love to write book reviews and have people love reading them. And when they contact me, I allow the extrovert in me to take over and to interact freely with them.

If you follow the book chapter by chapter, and answer all the exercises honestly, by the book’s end you should be able to begin to embrace the richness of you are actually are, and perhaps start cracking the eggshell which has encapsulated you all of these years. I know I’m now slowly beginning to allow this to happen.

After reading this book I not only feel it will benefit introverts, it should be read by the extroverts so they might be able to better understand their introverted friends.

The Quiet Introvert

I would like to thank Lisa Kimberly for sending me an electronic copy of her book 'The Quiet Introvert: Being Quiet in a Social World' which I won on Librarything. This is my honest review.

I found this book to be a very interesting read, as I am an introvert. Virtually everything written in this book, I could identify with. Now I know why my sister and I are so unlike. She is very much an extrovert! Parts of the book I did skim over and that is where employment was concerned. I gave up my job years ago to care for my family. Although I found this book interesting, I do feel it is more suited to those younger than myself.

A new and better understanding of Introverts

I love this book for several outstanding reasons. For one, this book made me realize that being introvert is not the worst thing in this extrovert-embracing world. When I answered the diagnostic questions in the first few pages, I am convinced that I am more of an introvert type. I have identified myself as someone who can be recharged when alone and drained when I'm drowned in a crowd. I also noticed that I am not strong and effective in brainstorming within a group but can separate and think about new ideas when alone. Second, this book made me realize that I have so many skills that I did not consider as skills until I read this book. Being able to have introspection, write sensible composition, thinking before acting: these are special skills that others do not have but we, introverts have.
I'm just very happy to have read this book because it has well presented the edge of introverts. This is such a helpful reference especially to teens who are struggling with the thought of being such. I recommend this book both to introverts and extroverts. I for one have realized so many things about this world and about myself that I could never have realized when I didn't open my mind to the advantages of being introvert. Now, I get to embrace what I can and can't do and am maximizing this potential that will turn into great introvert. This might sound very idealistic but I believe that there are just too many things that we could really explore about ourselves that will turn into something worth discovering and worth enriching. Thus, I am very grateful to have read this book.

Presos de sus palabras es un libro que comencé sin ninguna expectativa… pero el cual me encanto un montón.
Es la primera vez que leo algo de estas autoras, pero ahora (después de leer este libro) sé que no será el último, porque me he quedado muy satisfecha con lo que encontré y quiero más.
La historia es excitante, viene muy cargadito… pero no se pasa con las escenas de sexo, hay algo más detrás, una historia que hará a uno sonreír, querer matar a alguien, sentir todo lo que padecen los personajes.
En cuanto a ellos, los AME a todos, cada uno tiene ese algo especial que no dejara a nadie indiferente.
SE LOS RECOMIENDO, PORQUE SIN DUDAS LES ENCANTARA, además, se lee muy rápido ^^
