The book is filled with fresh and creative ideas. I love the multiple techniques and the resulting textures achieved. I am currently working on a layered meadow scene and next will tackle a large textured vessel.

Extremely satisfied with this book. As a Sophomore in High School, I wanted to study physics outside of school for fun. I know little to nothing about the fundamentals and basics of physics. This book mainly teaches you the equations and scenarios that help you learn them. I am half way through and I am liking what I am learning and am looking forward to progressing.

Best Book on Introductory Physics

I am *so* happy I found this book! It's everything you could possibly want: it explains the information in a clear, simple, concise manner without ever coming off as condescending. As an adult with a strong curiosity for science, I found this book to include all of the information I could have hoped for.

I bought it expecting a simple "Physics for Dummies" type of approach, but what I found was a detailed breakdown of physics, chemistry, electricity, and a handful of other fascinating subjects that are all directly connected to Physics. I never expected a single book to cover all of those subjects, much less in such a way as to show you how they are all connected. It's really quite brilliant. My favorite part is that each section includes a "Prerequisites" list, which is just a list of other sections in the book you should read first. This makes it very easy to skip around to the subjects that you're interested in.

Finally, the book is full of questions and self-tests. This isn't an academic book that just throws information at you non-stop. Each section tells you what you should expect to learn, includes questions throughout, and then finally ends with a self-exam.

I wish every academic book was this amazing. I've read $150 textbooks that aren't as well-structured and effective as this little $11 Kindle book. So if you want to learn about Physics (and all of the disciplines directly related to Physics), then do yourself a favor and BUY THIS BOOK!!!

Missing important concepts...

This book is just okay. I was hoping for more from it. I wanted to keep this in my Physics classroom for my students who need the concepts broken down further, but this book is missing many important concepts. There needs to be a new version to address all of the missing topics.

excellent text for considering the impact of Christianity on Platonism and vice-versa

If you were looking for a significant and representative but introductory level medieval Christian philosophy text, you would be hard pressed to find one better than this. When I teach intro to philosophy, I often choose representative texts from the ancient, medieval, early Modern, and roughly contemporary periods. I start with Plato, either the Apology or the Meno or both. Then we read this book. Then Descartes' Meditations. Finally, we read something from Nietzsche, de Beauvoir, or from an early American philosopher (e.g. Thoreau).

This book is an excellent part of the sequence because it introduces free will, and introduces it in a way that is very relevant to Descartes' discussion of will in connection with error. Plato (and the ancients generally) didn't really have a notion of the will: our choices are dictated by our level of understanding. Augustine understood that the Christian notion of sin entails something more radical than mere ignorance -- I must, he thought, be in some real way capable of unmotivated choice if I am to be blamed for my actions.

There are other great bits in this dialogue -- one that it IS a dialogue and so forms a nice segway from Plato's dialogues. Another is its articulation of a proof of existence that prefigures Descartes' cogito and a proof of God that is remarkably similar (though very different in intent) to Descartes' first proof in the meditations.

An Interesting Start

This is one of Augustine's early writings, from soon after his conversion. It records a conversation between himself and Evodius regarding free will. ... Augustine had very little access to Plato, and at this point in his life, probably nothing not quoted by another source. The dialogue is in fact based upon a real conversation, and not just a literary creation (a result of the philosophical community that Augustine lived in for some time after his conversion). However, Augustine edited it and added material (most of Bk. III) before publishing it.
The main things I thought a reader ought to note when reading this short work are (1) This is still the beginning of work on the will - it was not a major issue in philosophy until Augustine, although bits and pieces may be found, e.g. in Cicero; (2) Augustine's style is quite different from what most people are used to, especially since this is a record of an actual conversation; (3) the problem of evil for Augustine is of a different nature then that promulgated in modern times; (4) the only two people who had a paradigmatically free will were Adam and Eve - everyone else has a less than free will and requires God's grace to will effectively, even when they wish to do good.
It is an interesting work but still represents the early thought of Augustine. Those without a Neoplatonic background will find some of its arguments strange. There is no good introduction to Augustine - in my experience, you have to read a great deal of him in order to understand the typical way he thinks and the concepts he relies upon implicitly. Some Plotinus is probably useful.

Making math too fun to resist

This is an incredible book- really more of an activity center. My three year old absolutely loves it and the paper engineering is gorgeous. The book consists of many pages of pop-up illustrations and countless cards to explore different facets of numbers, shapes and introductory time skills. Text for adults gives suggestions on how to use the materials. My son adores the number stencils and especially the "pop-up die"- it pops into a 3" cube. It goes along with the simplest board game ever invented. You roll the die, and move your animal game-piece that number of spaces. Then the animals can come in "first", "second", or "third". There are countless cards: colored shapes to arrange into designs, and 2-D vs 3-D shapes too. Some cards have numbers 1-10, or domino dots to count. You can sort them into order, or use them for elementary equation excercises too. There are rudimentary counting games. For example, the two lilly pads. There are three frogs on one pad, move one to the other pad and two remain. For more advancved children there are sets of basic equations presented as a sort of pop-up book slide rule. There is also a cool teaching clock- as you rotate the hour hand, each number turns from white to red, the digital clock read-out shows below too. There are cards with the days of the week, and with pictured activities that occur at different times of the day. There is even a section with number rhymes to learn. This book is exciting and fun for my three year old and will continue to provide him with challanges as he grows and learns. I can't believe it...what a deal.

Not much changed from the 1st edition, but valuable for uderstanding Shi'ism in Iran. Very useful essay on sources.

This is a 2nd edition, and seems to be not much rewritten save the introduction, and a quite excellent "Epilogue" that is really an essay on sources, mostly published since the first edition of Morgan's book came out.

He considers that "medieval" really is appropriate for Persia in the era the book covers, that the fury of modernization did not significantly affect Persia until the 19th century. It's a complex history reflective of the 1980s when the original came out, lots od conquerors and rulers and some analysis of how the place was run, and wars and murders, but not much of what more recent histories concern themselves with: Morgan's book contains modest social history, very little about the common folk and little about women (save that a few were somewhat powerful through the institution of the harem, which was much more than a collection of the ruler's consorts). There's not much about the environment, either.

The book does a good job of giving a reader a sense of complexity and near-chaos. Most importantly he describes the rise of the Shi'a form of Islam and in particular the role of several Shahs in its becoming the dominant for of Islam in Persia. That alone is worth reading about, because it is fundamental to understanding 21st century Iran.
