Entertaining, but disappointing

Part of Nisei Daughter's charm is the way Sone is able to weave entertaining anecdotes throughout her tale, a story which is essentially about what being Japanese American in the time around wartime America meant to her. Specifically, her position as a Nisei daughter -- child of first generation Japanese Americans -- is the focus of this tale.
The disappointing thing about this book is how obviously self-censored the book is. Sone very briefly reveals deeply felt rage and resentment at intervals during the book, only to shake them off and quickly change to a more light-hearted topic. Granted, there is an ironic tone to many of her comments and situations, and again granted, she is writing for a post-war audience that probably would not be receptive to outspoken criticism of the Internment, but still Sone seems to sugar coat the experience just a bit too much for my tastes. By the end, with the patriotic speeches that make it sound like the Internment was as much the fault of the Japanese Americans as it was the government, I was getting a little tired of Sone's carefree and apologetic tone, especially after the highly charged preface. In the book, Sone all but thanks the government for interning her and her family and giving them this character-building experience.
If you are truly interested in the internment and the impact it had on the Japanese Americans, try a book like Joy Kogawa's "Obasan." It's written about the Japanese Canadian experience, which was even more extreme than the Japanese American one. Kogawa also experienced internment first hand, but "Obasan" is written far enough after the fact that Kogawa is able to give the story more perspective and is able to put a more honest face on what really happened.
Nisei Daughter is not a bad book by any means ... but it did not live up to my expectations either. Sone's self-conscious editing makes the story seem much more like a novel than the autobiography that it supposedly is. I kept wishing she would drop the mask she was wearing and let the reader see what she was really thinking!

An interesting, well-crafted memoir

This is the story told by a daughter of Japanese immigrants growing up in pre-World War II Seattle. She was in college when Pearl Harbor struck.
I think the best parts of this memoir deal with the description of Japanese culture and the conflict between the Americanism of the Nisei and their Issei parents most of whom heavily maintained Japanese customs. Perhaps the funniest part of the latter in the book takes place during the wedding reception held for her brother Henry and his bride in their camp in Idaho during the war.
I'd have to say that the best written, the most vivid part of the books is the family trip to visit relatives in Japan where her little brother Kenji fatally contracted dysentery. I'm guessing that this trip must have taken place around 1929.
The author gets released from camp mid-way through the war to go live with some former missionaries in Chicago who are very nice. She works for a dentist who is, however, a real pain in the butt and she eventually quits.
She then gets the opportunity to go attend Wendell college in Indiana where she lives with a nice old widow and she says that this college was full of alot of diverse foreign students. She made many close friends. During her post-camp period, her faith in American democracy was largely restored because she met so many nice white Americans who weren't racist louts. The book ends on a sort of patriotic note which I can't follow completely. In Chicago she was often mistaken for Chinese and people told her how much they respected the Chinese people, America's ally and she was sometimes mistaken for various Chinese celebrities.
It's obvious, that the author, who at the time of this 1979 edition, was still a clinical psychologist, knows how to write. She is a very gifted descriptive writer, though sometimes she lays it on too heavy. She tells her life story with a great deal of sentimentality; at times I think she pours it on a little too sweetly. But heck it's her story and she crafts it very well.

Both my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this wonderful story about growing up in America as a 2nd generation Japanese-American. It is an important book to read so that we can better appreciate how fortunate folks are in the USA, and the importance of continued acceptance of other cultures and future citizens of the USA.

A dictionary of the sects and divisions within Islam.

Written by a 12th century Muslim theologian this book was intended to give his fellow theologians a clear concise dictionary of the early to his time theological sects within Islam.

The book covers the major three Islamic groups the Sunni, Shia and Khawarij and then the sub groups that exist amongst them. The author provides the reader with a brief account of how the sect came into being, the founder of the sect and its teachings.

Of particular interest to the reader will be the authors examination of the beliefs of the Mutazila and its various sub groups, the Jahmiyya, the Asharites and the various sub groups of the Shia.

The book may be a little too much to consume for the casual reader or the beginner in the study of Islam but for someone who wishes to study Islam in depth then this book is invaluable as it will give the reader an understanding of the theological divisions within Islam and how they developed. It will give the reader an understanding of for example, the differences between a Shia and Sunni, when Muslims refer to a group as having 'Jahmiyya' beliefs just what that is, why even amongst Shia there are massive theological differences.

Shahrastani was a man of his time. A committed Sunni Muslim (which some may argue may cloud some of his views he presents in his book) He taught at the great Nizamiyye and engaged in debates with probably the largest and greatest theological threat to Sunni Islam at the time the Ismailis. The main fault with the book is that it is so short and for the price it may be worth shopping around.

Other than that, a first class book and one well worth buying.

One of the Best but Intensive Texts

It might not have lush photos and graphics, yet this revised printing version of "Introduction to Organic Chemistry" remains one of the most authoritative text for introductory level.
Readers are assumed solid mastery of one year of general chemistry since the coverage on electronic structure and bonding is succinct. Readers should be able to draw Lewis dot structures and identify the major resonance structures from all resonance structures, etc.
Two separate chapters discuss respectively organic structures and chapter reactions, who incorporate the simple chemistry of alkanes (hydrocarbons). Stereoisomerism is introduced early in the text so students can grasp this important concept and the consequence on reactions, reactivity and distribution of products.
Discussion on nucleophilic substitution reaction is somewhat obscure that might requires a few readings in order to grasp the idea. Discussion on various functional groups (alkenes, alkynes, nitriles, ketones, enol, carboxylic acids, carboxylic derivatives) are very detailed and problems focus on multistep organic synthesis.
Information on spectroscopy (NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, etc) might not be comparable to a text that devotes to these spectroscopy topics, but students will learn the gist and essence of using these techniques in determining organic structures.
What makes this text distinguish itself from others are the chapters on hetero atoms like phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. Another chapter is devoted to difunctional compounds which are siginificant intermediates and starting points for synthesis. Discussion on biological macromolecules like carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins are also included. Readers will also find the door to advanced topics such as aromatic halides, phenols, phenyl ethers, polycyclic aromatic compounds, and heterocyclic compounds.
Overall the information presented here is very detailed and geared toward advanced study and research. This is highly recommended for serious chemisty students. Excellent problems. Highly recommended.

Lots of Molecular Orbitals

This includes a lot of the physics behind organic chemistry. Streitweiser did a lot of pioneering work in the 50s calculating molecular orbitals so that aspect is very nicely covered. He discovered a lot of what is presented so it gives the book a sense of authority.
The writing has an appealing friendliness to it, like an older relative is taking you under their wing as an apprentice. Their are a few reminisences, such as the time they distilled an explosive peroxide and the resultant explosion moved furniture in nearby rooms it shook the building so much.

This is a very hard-core and detailed treatment of the subject of organic chemistry. Ideal for chemistry majors, this book has served as a refresher for me as a professional chemist. The book assumed mastery over general chemistry and the prerequisites of chemical structure and bonding. Practice problems are only to help develop further insight and application of the chemistry presented.

All fluff and no stuffing

Three words of advice: save your money. Whereas "The Closers" was all steak, "The Closers 2" is as thin as one scrawny piece of bacon. There really is no subtsance to this book. It puports to yield more "secrets" to powerful selling, but it's full of light and largely useless bromides. As I was reading it I felt sure I would come to the "good stuff" soon, but never did. It was like one continuous preface, telling you what goodies there were coming soon, but never getting to them. It is shameful that the cover carries a "WARNING -- not for the beginner or novice, but for sales professionals ONLY." This is puffery of the worse kind, a sleazy sales "trick" that does not belong in any self-respecting salespersons's reportoire. I'm afraid the rest of the book goes downhill from there.
