The Hairdresser of Harare: A Novel (Modern African Writing Series), by Tendai Huchu

“Hairdresser was a perfect end of summer read; my book was sticky from sweat and sugary from bubbling peaches that went into the pies and preserves I was making – a delicious hair-salon-gossip kind of novel about minding, mending and maintaining social mores. It is a novel about hearbreak, but more seriously, it is also about the inevitable breaks that happen in one’s psyche, sometimes accompanied by injury to the physical body, when one’s community disciplines in order to reinforce its social and sexual expectations.” —Neelika Jayawardane Africa is a Country
In this delicious and devastating first novel, which The Guardian named one of its ten best contemporary African books, Caine Prize finalist Tendai Huchu (The Maestro, the Magistrate, and the Mathematician) portrays the heart of contemporary Zimbabwean society with humor and grace.

Vimbai is the best hairdresser in Mrs. Khumalo’s salon, and she is secure in her status until the handsome, smooth-talking Dumisani shows up one day for work. Despite her resistance, the two become friends, and eventually, Vimbai becomes Dumisani’s landlady. He is as charming as he is deft with the scissors, and Vimbai finds that he means more and more to her. Yet, by novel’s end, the pair’s deepening friendship—used or embraced by Dumisani and Vimbai with different futures in mind—collapses in unexpected brutality.

The novel is an acute portrayal of a rapidly changing Zimbabwe. In addition to Vimbai and Dumisani’s personal development, the book shows us how social concerns shape the lives of everyday people.

Review
“This sharp, entertaining, and thoughtful debut is rife with sociopolitical commentary but never loses its humanity…. Through deceptively simple observations and plain prose, Huchu exposes readers to issues of classism, racism, and homophobia without ever coming across as preachy or heavy-handed.” —Kirkus Reviews

“This glorious book defies classification with its astute sociopolitical commentary nestling inside the appealing, often comic story of a young woman who will not accept defeat. With a light touch and real skill, Huchu takes us through the life-sapping economic realities of contemporary Harare.”
—The Guardian

“Written with a clear, economical style and deceptive simplicity, this is a novel one can glide through in a matter of hours and end up wanting more.”
—The Herald (Scotland)

“Tendai Huchu’s excellent novel deftly mixes a touching narrative with sharp social commentary…. Vimbai’s narration is light and comic, recounting the little joys and absurdities of her job, before she gestures arrestingly to the bleak realities of life in Zimbabwe.”
—The Independent

“Huchu brings Harare’s public and private spaces to vivid life. These people and places are distinguished by aspiration and failure, international engagement and small-town provincialism, wealth and poverty, family ties and bitter mistrust—and, always, the specter of violence and a tenuous peace.”
—Minneapolis Star Tribune

Another outstanding novel out of Africa
By Mal Warwick
You can read a dozen nonfiction books about Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe’s kleptocracy and fail to get a more vivid sense of what life is really like there than from this recent novel by Tendai Huchu. In one short work of fiction, Huchu conjures up the sad reality of day-to-day existence in that beleaguered country: the 90 percent unemployment, the ubiquitous corruption, the hyperinflation, the ever-present shortages, the barely functional electricity service, the vicious eviction of white Africans from their farms and businesses, the rabid homophobia. The people of resource-rich Zimbabwe are among the world’s most poverty-stricken, and average life expectancy in their country is thirty-seven, but what does that really mean for the way they live their lives, day after day? The Hairdresser of Harare opens up a window on that steadily unfolding tragedy.

Here is Huchu summing up this reality: “I felt an atmosphere of friendliness, violence, innovation, poverty, joy, but the only thing that hung over everything else was despair; an air of hopelessness as if everyone was in a pit that they could not climb out of.”

Set in the capital city, Harare, and revolving around the hairdressers who eke out a living from a beauty salon, The Hairdresser is the first-person account of a talented beautician named Sisi Vimbai. As a teenager, Vimbai was impregnated by her Sugar Daddy, a wealthy businessman who quickly grew distant soon after she gave birth to a daughter. Now nearly twenty-six, with a ten-year-old to support, Vimbai is on the verge of desperation when a new threat arises: a handsome young man of twenty-two named Dumi has displaced her as the salon’s most sought-after hairdresser. The novel spins out the tale of Vimbai and Dumi’s growing relationship.

Since writing The Hairdresser of Harare, which appeared in 2010, Huchu has published a second novel, The Maestro, the Magistrate, and the Mathematician. A native of Zimbabwe, he now lives in Scotland and is employed as a podiatrist.

In The 'Hairdresser of Harare', there were many twists and turns throughout the book. I would say that this book would be best for people from the ages 16 and above. The book uses some foul and mature language, as you get deeper into the story. The story talks about the life of a boy who was abandoned by his family because of a sexist "issue". The book also refers to situations that actually happen in real life such as families and friends competing for money and business. This book also talks about politics in the society today such as gays not being accepted, black businesses trying to make a living, and unemployment. The tone of this book is threatening yet optimistic, so the ease of the reading of this book is pretty understanding and is easy to process. I think that this book was very interesting and age appropriate considering the fact that many issues that go on in the world today, was spoken about throughout the book. 'The Hairdresser of Harare' had discussed issues that are relevant today. I could relate to many of the problems that was going on throughout the book and understand how hard some of the issues were to overcome.

Fine writing --fiction, but really true!
By asiana
A wonderful description of Zimbabwe as it is today -- it's peoples, manners, and its pervasive corruption as told through the lives of a hairdresser and his fellow workers, family and neighbors. Although the author currently lives abroad, I certainly can understand why he left his homeland. Having known an elderly lady who was forced to leave Zimbabwe, her home for 60 years after Rhodesia became independent, this book, although fiction, seemed as if she had written it.

For those interested in what it's like to live in Zimbabwe, I highly recommend Peter Godwin's books: Mukiwa, When a Crocodile Eats the Sun and The Fear. Also, Christina Lamb's House of Stone is another fine book. .
