Philip Drummer is a newly crowned physician fresh out of medical school. His surgical internship takes him to the prestigious Philadelphia General Hospital where he begins training under the famous Dr. Richard Knight. This ranking compares Dr. Knight to all of the other cardiac surgeons in the region, and fuels his larger than life persona. Unfortunately for all, Dr. Knight’s patients begin to die at an alarming rate, causing his local aura to suffer. To complicate the matter Phil becomes intimately involved with the current mistress of Dr. Knight. A mistress who lives in an opulent world funded by the wealthy and distinguished Doctor Knight. Phil Drummer soon finds himself fighting for survival in the midst of his powerful mentor’s suddenly confused life. A mentor, who once swore to a Hippocratic oath, yet is inexplicably trying to cope with a series of deaths amid a crumbling reputation. For everyone involved at the Philadelphia General Hospital the situation rapidly becomes a matter of life and death - amid rising suspicions as to the exact cause of each fatal event.

About the Author
Dr. Michael Banas completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Scranton. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine followed by an Orthopedic Residency at the University of Rochester. His final year of surgical training took him to Los Angeles where he completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute. Dr. Banas currently resides in Dallas, PA with his wife and six children. He specializes in Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine.

Interesting medical drama

I downloaded this book because I know the author. Many years ago, he was a talented basketball player at the high school where I was employed as a new teacher. Michael went on to become an orthopedic surgeon and a father to six children. I am currently teaching his youngest daughter (at the same high school.) When I heard he wrote a book, being an avid reader, I was excited to read it.
I am certainly in awe of anyone who would have the ideas, determination to write a full length novel!
I thought the story started out a bit slowly. It is a mystery and the "mysterious" parts didn't begin until about 25% into the book. However, the descriptions of the life of an intern and resident in the fictitious Philadelphia hospital were interesting and well-written. When patients of a renowned surgeon start mysteriously dying the story began to unfold. You were really kept guessing until the end. My only small problem with the novel was the development of the character, Jenna. The first half she was depicted as the younger mistress of the much older, married surgeon. She was breathtakingly beautiful and of course the protagonist, Dr. Phil Drummer, a first year intern, was attracted to her. When she becomes Phil's girlfriend, ending her relationship with the surgeon, she seems different, nicer, I guess. As a woman who lives with a married man, taking advantage of his wealth and position, she wasn't someone I would like or respect. But later on she seems like a wonderful, caring person.
Finally, I really appreciated the descriptions of the car accident because my niece had recently suffered almost the same trauma in an auto accident. All of Dr. Banas's descriptions were easy to understand, but detailed enough to give extra information to the reader.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys medical mysteries and I congratulate Dr. Banas on his writing it. I hope he continues to write in the future.

Getting to the top is hard. Staying there even harder...

Great read. Suspense, intrigue, romance with vivid and dramatic insights into the intense training and demanding schedule of a medical intern.
I enjoyed the tyrannical Dr Knight. I'd choose a competent, obsessed doctor any day over one who is simply nice. LOL... You don't enter the doctor's office seeking friends.
I thought the ending could be more convincing but I gave the book five stars because it was a compelling story and a reader can learn a lot from this book - without even trying. I recommend.

I was intrigued by the detail and as a lover of suspense themes I can say that I did not suspect the outcome in advance! That's unusual. I would and have highly recommend it to friends and booklovers. Jane Feeney
